Picturesque, historic, cute…… It isn’t too hard to think of adjectives to describe North Hatley, one of the most charming villages in Quebec. This attractive community on the north shore of Lake Massawippi, is replete with architectural reminders of the past – large, handsome homes that were once the secondary residences of wealthy Americans who fled northwards every summer to escape the heat of the southern States.
One of their homes has been reborn as a luxury hotel, namely Manoir Hovey, the one-time retreat of Henry Atkinson who owned Atlanta’s Georgia Power. Constructed in 1900, the five-star Manoir Hovey is now a hotel famed for its haute cuisine, a member of the prestigious Paris-based association Relais & Châteaux and part of the Chef créateurs network. Another interesting eatery is the charming Saveurs & Gourmandises, a Café de village.
